Future Shock #4 and Vortex #1-3 at Farewell Books and CAKE; Vortex #4 Progress Update

I’ve dropped copies of Future Shock #4 and Vortex #1-3 off at Farewell Books here in Austin, located in Domy’s old space.

If you’re going to CAKE this weekend in Chicago, Kevin Czap will also have a few copies of the new Future Shock.

Vortex 4 endpapers work-in-progress
I’ve decided to draw the endpapers for this issue. My hand hurts.

I’ve been making good progress on Vortex. I’ve decided that #4 will be the final issue and I’ve pencilled all the way to the end. I’m over halfway done inking it also. My goal is to get the drawing done in June.

Future Shock #4 on Sale; “Hawk” from Future Shock #1

Future Shock #4, edited by Josh Burggraf, is now on sale here through the Birdcage Bottom Books distro.

Here’s one of the three pages that I did in collaboration with Sean T Collins for this issue:

Now that #4 is out and #1 is almost out of print, I thought I’d share my comic “Hawk” that I drew for #1:

For “Hawk” I was experimenting with the pencil-style I used for the comic I drew in Frank Santoro’s correspondence comics course, “Moon Queen.” The story itself was, perhaps too obviously, inspired by M John Harrison’s horrific but beautifully written book Light, which I highly recommend.

Hyperbroadcasts: Less Posting, TCAF, Future Shock #4

Filed under: Print Comics — Tags: , — William Cardini @ 11:46 pm

Hey y’all! I’ve gotten a bit behind in blogging. I’m going to hibernate for a while to get some serious work done. I’ll resurface when I have something substantial. Here’s a progress shot from Vortex #4, which, despite my 2013 new year’s resolution, I’ve only finished five pages of:

The next time you’ll see me is TCAF 2013. Unfortunately Vortex #4 won’t be ready by then.

I’ll be tabling with Josh Burggraf, who’ll be debuting Future Shock #4.

I have a comic in there that I did in collaboration with Sean T Collins.

“The Miizzzard of the Year One Million ATTACKS the Moon Base of the Floating Crystal Witch” Preview Page

I finally finished the six-page full-color comic that I’ve been working on and blogging about for the past few weeks. It’s going to be in the third issue of Future Shock, a sf anthology edited by Josh Burggraf.

Here’s the first page as a preview:

The Miizzzard of the Year One Million ATTACKS the Moon Base of the Floating Crystal Witch Page 1

I’m pretty proud of this one, I put a lot of work into it. By the way, if you’ve wanted to buy the first issue of Future Shock or other comics put out by Josh that I’ve mentioned, they’re now available through the Birdcage Bottom Books distro.

“The Miizzzard of the Year One Million ATTACKS the Moon Base of the Floating Crystal Witch” Process Shots

I’m focused on finishing a six-page full-color comic for the second issue of the Josh Burggraf-edited sf anthology Future Shock.

Here are some process shots in MangaStudio. First I draw color outlines and rough shapes with the pencil tool. Then I draw black containing lines for shapes with the marker and pen nib tools. I give the black lines different transparencies so that I can see where they overlap.

William Cardini process shot

I draw detail lines outside of containing shapes and then erase them later.

The page in this final shot is almost done. After I’m finished with a page in MangaStudio, I transfer it to Photoshop and fill in the black shapes and lines with different colors.

I’m working on a couple different projects. I’m not sure how much in-depth posting I’ll be doing over the next few months.

Comics on Sale at Domy Austin; Reviews

Hey ya’ll, I just dropped off the Josh Burggraf-edited psychedelic sf anthology Future Shock at Domy Books here in Austin. Check out the cover:

Future Shock cover

Future Shock is 44 full-color pages of freak out sf short stories by the main man JB, Anuj Shrestha, Pat Aulisio, myself, and Victor Kerlow, drawing comics solo and collabo. I’m really excited by what Josh has done with this, but don’t take my word for it, check some words of praise from Tim Callahan in a post-MoCCA review roundup on Comic Book Resources. The anthology is $7. I also restocked Vortex #1 and #2.

In other news, comics by both me and Burggraf got reviewed by Rob Clough on High-Low in a roundup of “odd genre minis”. Clough has this to say about Vortex #2: “Working big and using so many decorative patterns gives this issue a psychedelic feel, yet one that’s grounded in rock-solid and simple layouts.”

Sketchbook Pages – Hawk, Vortex #2, and Miscellaneous

Here are some sketchbook pages from the past couple months. This first page has sketches for Vortex #2, “Hawk” in Future Shock, and just some random drawings:

I really like the cat spaceship shooting lasers from its eyes to the left of the question, “Who made the Vortex?”

On this second page I was mostly brainstorming for Page 18 of Vortex #2 (also the first page of this preview of Vortex #2 (Update 1/13/2017: this link no longer works)):

MoCCA 2012

Thanks to everyone who came out on Wednesday! I’ll have a more substantial post about the release party up later.

Once again I’ll be missing MoCCA but my presence will be haunting the tables because I have work debuting in two anthologies. Secret Prison #666 has a jam drawing I did with Keenan Marshall Keller and Future Shock, the full-color sf anthology edited by Josh Burrgraf, has my two-page story “Hawk”. If you’re at MoCCA check ’em out!
