Glade and Mark’s Hensel Hypercastle

Here’s a print that I made for Glade and I’s show at Austin Books:

Hensel Hypercastle

This print is called “Glade and Mark’s Hensel Hypercastle” because Glade suggested I base one of our hypercastle prints on the hypercastle I drew for this page of my comic “Rocky Mountain Chomp.” I was originally going to make a two-color screenprint, but I designed the screens with overprinting (so I wouldn’t have to worry about precise registration) without realizing that the bottom blue layer would show through the yellow top layer. Rookie mistake!

One Color Hypercastle

Hey y’all, here’s the digital, colored version of the one-color screenprint design that I did for Glade and I’s show at Austin Books and Comics, up in the back room all of this August:

One Color Hypercastle

For this print I was experimenting with getting as many different shades and textures out of a single color as I could. Unfortunately, all the small details made screenprinting difficult. About half of the prints turned out okay. My winning formula was to flood the screen first, hold the squeegee at an angle greater than sixty degrees, and put minimum steady pressure. At Austin Books you can peruse the prints, they range in color from fresh to dried blood.

This past Wednesday Glade and I went to Austin Books and Comics to put up our print show.

Here’s a post-install pic:

Glade and Mark's Hypercastles at Austin Books and Comics

The prints will be up and for sale there the entire month of August.

From left to right, we have:

  • “One-Color Hypercastle Screenprint” by Mark, $20 – This is the print I was posting about on Tuesday. It’s available in dried and fresh blood red
  • “Hyperhut” by Glade, $15 – This is a digital print of a piece that Glade made out of cut paper.
  • “Glade and Mark’s Hensel Hypercastle” by Mark, $20 – This is a digital print.
  • “Welcome to the Hypercastle” by Glade, $20 – This is a digital print of a gouache original.
  • “Rainbow Hypercastle” by Mark, $20 – This is a digital print.
  • “Flower Hypercastle” by Glade, $15 – This is a digital print of a gouache original.
  • “3D Hypercastle” by Mark, $20 – This is a digital print that’s made in red/blue anaglyph 3D. There are a pair of glasses that you can use to try it out hanging beneath the print.

As you can tell from the names, the theme of our prints is hypercastles. I’ll be posting larger pictures of each print throughout this month. If you want one and you can’t make it to Austin Books, please let me know in a comment or by any of the means on my connect page.

2001 Nights by Yukinobu Hoshino and Tone Sheets

Man, SXSW was crazy – 25th anniversary and the biggest year yet! I only went to a couple of shows. The highlights of my South By this year were What’s Tappening, Chica Vas, and Harsh Realm II at Monofonus.

Anyway last week I mentioned how I got three volumes of 2001 Nights by Yukinobu Hoshino. Now I’m going to post the my favorite examples of tone sheet usage and show you what they inspired me to make.

I love the gas giant (is it a processed photograph?) and the circles of light from the propulsion of the ship on the right in this page:

A page from the chapter “Night 6: Discovery” in 2001 Nights by Yukinobu Hoshino.

The gradient tone sheets on this spaceship blow my mind:

E.A.S.T. Recap and New Miizzzard Screenprint for Sale

I hope that everyone in the U.S. had a belly-filling Thanksgiving! One thing I’m thankful for is everyone who came by our studio during E.A.S.T., so thanks y’all. Of course, what I have is never enough, so Glade and I spent some time brainstorming ways to bring even more people in next year. We’ll see if they work.

If you’re feeling nostalgic, I just added a couple photos to the East Austin Studio Tour 2010 set on my flickr, check it out here.

On the last day of the tour, I finally had a new edition of 20 Miizzzard screenprints ready for sale. Here’s a shot of the purple/green version (there’s also purple/orange):

Stop #107 on the East Austin Studio Tour: Second Weekend

Thanks to everyone who came out to our place on the East Austin Studio Tour last weekend! Those who couldn’t make it, there’s still this upcoming weekend. We’ll be open to visitors from 11am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday with free beer, snacks, and art.

Here’s how my studio is looking during the interstitial:

View of my Studio between the two E.A.S.T. 2010 Weekends

If you look closely on the bookshelf on the left, you can see an old broken toy Grimlock. Is that worth anything? The painting on the easel in the middle is something that I intended to finish during last weekend (working on it while people stopped by). I didn’t get very far, though; I forgot how hard it is to actually work on anything during E.A.S.T. On the right, in the background, you can see a collection of Gold County Paper Mill merch that I have for sale. On the right, in the foreground, you can see two screens that I got burned at Industry Screenprint this past week. I plan on using them to print a new Miizzzard screenprint for next weekend.

Stop #107 on the East Austin Studio Tour: First Weekend

The annual East Austin Studio Tour is this upcoming weekend and the following. Studios all over the east side will be open from 11am to 6pm on Sat Nov 13th, Sun Nov 14th, Sat Nov 20th, and Sun Nov 21st. Glade and I are participating just like we did last year. We’re Stop #107 on the tour (1807 E 22ND ST). We’re gonna have another Aaron Flynn installation in the garage but unfortunately Alison Kuo moved to NYC so she won’t be here to install by our couch again, but we do have one of her drawings from her solo show at SOFA. Everything in our living room will be completely different from last year – we’ll be showing all of my work that didn’t sell at my Domy show, our artwork from our show at End of an Ear, and our engagement art.

As some of you may recall, several weeks ago I went to my parents’ house in Houston and cleaned out my old room. I brought some boxes of my old stuff back, which made my normally cluttered studio an impossible-to-navigate mess. I’ve spent the last week cleaning and getting rid of stuff and I thought it would be fun to post before and after shots.

So, here they are:

Hypermorph Animation – Rough Cut

This concludes my series of posts of installation shots of my show Hypermorph at Domy Books, Houston.

On the southern wall, I painted the title of my show and had a TV playing an animation on a loop:

Here’s the animation that was playing on the TV (it doesn’t have any sound):

Hypermorph Animation – Rough Cut

I’m calling this a rough cut because I intend to go back in and expand/refine this animation and have my brother do some music for it.
