Five-Eyed Office-Dwelling Cat-Demon #1

I’ve been taking it easy since I finished my collabo with Sean T Collins for Thickness #3, just sketching and doing fun ink drawings. One idea I have is to do a series of five-eyed office-dwelling cat-demon drawings. Here’s one of them:

Would y’all be into a zine of these d00dz?

Hey y’all, I got my contributor copies of RUB THE BLOOD, edited by Ian Harker and Pat Aulisio, in the mail:

RUB THE BLOOD stack on my cutting board
I’m proud to be in this monstrosity. You can see the front and back covers by Victor Cayro and the interior spread by Mickey Z.

You can now order RTB on my store, it’s $5 plus shipping. (Update 1/13/2017: I’ve been sold out of RTB for years.) You can also order it from editor Ian Harker through mail order, just email him at doppelgangercomics@yahoo.com. I’m also going to be sure to bring these bad boys to STAPLE! where the Gold County Paper Mill will be tabling alongside Glademade for the fourth year in a row.

This also seems like a good post to show y’all the ink drawings that I made for the RUB THE BLOOD art show at Brave New Worlds in Philly this past January. The drawings are 7×10″ ink renditions of the two characters I used in my RUB THE BLOOD comic, Lightbeam and Bludwurld the Living Battle Planet:

Also, I didn’t realize this, but 2012 is the 20th anniversary of Image. In honor of this, Ao Meng has a post up on the Daily Texan Comics blog that discusses the legacy of Image, the Brandon Graham and Simon Roy reinterpretation of Prophet, and RUB THE BLOOD. It includes a short interview with yours truly.

Hic & Hoc is a new art comics publisher that’s got some kewl books scheduled to debut this MoCCA, including my man Pat Aulisio‘s sequel to his Retrofit book Bowman, called (appropriately enough) Bowman 2016.

Hic & Hoc is currently soliciting drawings of their logo and I thought I’d try it out:

The first ten people to send Hic & Hoc a logo get some free copies of the first Hic & Hoc comics. If you’re interesting I bet there’s still be time, that was posted on Wednesday. The only instructions are that “Hic and Hoc are incompetent pirates’ mateys.” Have at it y’all!

I hope that everyone had a happy holidays, if that’s your thing. 2012 is beginning in a couple of days and I’m stoked about the possibilities of a new year.

I’ll resume regular posting next week but for now enjoy this photo of my fellow cartoonist Kyle Nolan standing in front of the EPCOT geodesic dome, sporting the Candy or Medicine t-shirt with my drawing:

Our coffee table is chockful of comics. Most of them are for reading but a few are for sale. I’ve got comics I’ve drawn (such as my latest, VORTEX), comics by fellow GCPM members (such as Kid Space Heater by Josh Burggraf and Lords ov thee Black Sun by Mike Miles), two issues of the GCP’s poetry/comics anthology Catch Up, and various issues of anthologies that I’ve been in (Math Fiction, Candy or Medicine, Smoke Signal, Taffy Hips, and Secret Prison). Come by, chill out on our couch, and feel free to flip through everything.

Hyperbox Ink Draw

Does anyone reading this remember my Hyperbox minis? Hyperbox was a long comic serialized in minis that I started but unfortunately never finished. I drew three issues for a total of 60 pages between December 2007 and June 2008.

Someone ordered those comics from me recently so I decided to do this Hyperbox ink drawing:

I don’t plan on ever finishing Hyperbox because my style has changed too much since then but some of the ideas that I put into it will probably resurface in future works.

Figure Drawing

I went and did some figure drawing last night. Austin Figurative Gallery does an event every Monday from 7 to 9pm at the 29th Street Ballroom. It’s $5 to attend.

I hadn’t done any figure drawing since I was a freshman in college but after a couple quick warmups it all felt familiar again, except for the d00d drawing with his wacom in Corel Painter. Not that I’m against it (I do most of my drawing with a wacom) but that’s definitely a tool I’ve never thought about using for figure drawing. When I was in school I would use charcoal or pastels on newsprint or butcher paper, but I didn’t want to have to go out and buy a bunch of new supplies so I used some pencils and a Prismacolor brush tip marker in my sketchbook.

Here are my best pages of sketches from this session:

Contour drawings with the Prismacolor brush tip marker. Three to five minutes per drawing.

The one on the right is more of a traditional figure drawing with a softer lead pencil, either 2B or 6B. For the one on the left, I tried to do what Frank Santoro talks about in his blogpost Color Workbook 1: define the shape of the figure with gray and then add contours on top. Three to five minutes per drawing.

Contour drawings with a 6B pencil. I balanced some levels in Photoshop so the lines are easy to see. Three to five minutes per drawing.

I’ll be going back next week – maybe I’ll see y’all there?

3D Hypercastle Print

Here’s the final print from Glade and I’s show at Austin Books:

3D Hypercastle

This digital print is called “3D Hypercastle” because it’s red/blue anaglyph 3D. I kept the blue stationary and shifted the red layers, so the 3D glasses that I got from Toy Joy only work if you fold them backwards.

Here’s a colored, non-3D version of the print:

Colored 3D Hypercastle

Although the show is no longer up in the back room of Austin Books, you can still buy them from us or from the print rack at Austin Books:

Let me know if you want to get something. Here are the links to the rest of our prints:

Rainbow Hypercastle

Here’s a print that I made for Glade and I’s show at Austin Books:

Rainbow Hypercastle

It’s called “Rainbow Hypercastle.” I was mashing together flying whales, Penrose triangles, floating islands, space, custom patterns, rainbows, and the devil’s fork.
