“The Miizzzard ATTACKS the Munchies” Preview Panel

This past weekend I finished my contribution to the food-and-eating themed comics anthology Digestate, edited by JT Yost. My comic is a four-paged story called “The Miizzzard ATTACKS the Munchies.” Here’s a preview panel:

I may have gone overboard with patterns for my comic but I think it’s a fun one. Yost has put together a truly impressive collection of cartoonists for this book, check out his blog for a full list and sample images. Digestate debuts at this year’s SPX.

New Character Design for Frog

Happy Friday the 13th y’all!

For my comic for the food and eating comics anthology Digestate, edited by JT Yost, I worked on a new design for my recurring frog character, check it out:

Frog has appeared as the Miizzzard’s psychopomp in my unfinished minicomic series Hyperbox, as the manifestation of a shamanic curse in Froghead Hangover, and was the star of the comic I drew in college for The Daily Texan. This is what Frog used to look like:

I also like to throw random frogheads into my drawings and paintings. Digestate debuts at SPX 2012.

“Summoning” Comic from the Previous Catch Up Issue

Because the new issue of Catch Up is out, I decided to add the comic that I drew for the previous issue, before I became the comics editor, to my comics page.

Click the splash page to be taken directly to the two-page full-color comic, called “Summoning.”

“Summoning” stars the Miizzzard and my fellow GCPM members Jak Cardini and Chuch.

Mini-Comics Day Recap

Mini-Comics Day at Dragon’s Lair was pretty good. Rather than work on a new mini, I just worked on Math Fiction Squared. I drew for four hours and got about halfway done with three pages. I’m almost done.

Here’s a preview shot I posted on my flickr last week:

Mark P Hensel Math Fiction Squared Preview

This image hasn’t had the red/blue anaglyph 3d effect applied to it yet (obviously). It’s also been rotated and flipped. I’m having a lot of fun experimenting with different custom patterns for this project. I want to go back and add the patterns to all my old comics, but although that probably won’t happen I’m definitely going to start using them more going forward.

E.A.S.T. Recap and New Miizzzard Screenprint for Sale

I hope that everyone in the U.S. had a belly-filling Thanksgiving! One thing I’m thankful for is everyone who came by our studio during E.A.S.T., so thanks y’all. Of course, what I have is never enough, so Glade and I spent some time brainstorming ways to bring even more people in next year. We’ll see if they work.

If you’re feeling nostalgic, I just added a couple photos to the East Austin Studio Tour 2010 set on my flickr, check it out here.

On the last day of the tour, I finally had a new edition of 20 Miizzzard screenprints ready for sale. Here’s a shot of the purple/green version (there’s also purple/orange):

Stop #107 on the East Austin Studio Tour: Second Weekend

Thanks to everyone who came out to our place on the East Austin Studio Tour last weekend! Those who couldn’t make it, there’s still this upcoming weekend. We’ll be open to visitors from 11am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday with free beer, snacks, and art.

Here’s how my studio is looking during the interstitial:

View of my Studio between the two E.A.S.T. 2010 Weekends

If you look closely on the bookshelf on the left, you can see an old broken toy Grimlock. Is that worth anything? The painting on the easel in the middle is something that I intended to finish during last weekend (working on it while people stopped by). I didn’t get very far, though; I forgot how hard it is to actually work on anything during E.A.S.T. On the right, in the background, you can see a collection of Gold County Paper Mill merch that I have for sale. On the right, in the foreground, you can see two screens that I got burned at Industry Screenprint this past week. I plan on using them to print a new Miizzzard screenprint for next weekend.

Hypermorph Drawings and Miizzzard versus Wojrollox Paintings

My blog and site are mostly done, but I’m still tweaking. I’ll let y’all know when I stop tinkering with this. Please let me know if anything’s broken or looks weird.

I went to Houston this past weekend to clean up my old room at my parents’ house. I had to sort through so much artwork, so many drawings of cyborg dragons and spike- and muscle-ridden dinosaurs. It gave me some ideas. I’ll scan some of my old drawz to post eventually.

More importantly, my Hypermorph show at Domy Books Houston went down on 10/21 so I’m free to post everything. Over the next week I’ll be posting what was on each wall. Here’s a shot of the opening with the eastern wall that I’ll post details from this time:

Domy Houston Show Sept 25th – Oct 21st

I’m going to have a show at Domy Books Houston from Sept 25th to Oct 21st. The opening is going to be on Sept 25th from 7 to 9 pm. I’m going to be working on it as much as possible until then. I have a long list of things that I want to make but not enough time to make all of them.

Here’s a sketch I made for a painting for the show:

Right now I’m thinking that the show is going to be paintings from a battle between the Miizzzard and the Wojrollox. I want to paint a lot of weird transformations, intensely patterned and colorful costumes, and strange worlds.
