Lake Conroe Sketch

Filed under: Sketchbook Pages — Tags: , — William Cardini @ 7:52 am

Back in April I spent a weekend with some friends at a lakehouse at the northern end of Lake Conroe (near Houston). The northern end of the lake is less busy because the lake is shallow and there are a lot of tree stumps, mud, and other obstructions. We went out on a boat ride among the detritus and I felt inspired to make this sketch:

This alien crystal lake may be the setting for a future comic.

Hypermorph – Bathanklyopod

Filed under: Sketchbook Pages — Tags: , — William Cardini @ 7:07 am

I drew another Hypermorph in pencil (you can see my previous ones here):

Hypermorph - Bathanklyopod
This Hypermorph’s name is Bathanklyopod. Over ten thousand years ago, on a nameless planet in the Hyperverse, a bat was dying in a cave near where two powerful Hyperbeings were battling. In a desperate move, the Hyperbeing Kygargz dropped a twenty gigaton transmutation bomb to distract its opponent so that it could escape. The bat was caught up in the resulting mutation wave and Bathanklyopod was born. She’s wearing armor she pieced together from parts of other Hypermorphs that she has killed in battle.

I like drawing Hypermorphs. I just start at the top and let my pencil wander.

Sketches for a New Comic

I’ve been working on a new comic for the next issue of the magazine Catch Up, which is produced by the publishing/art collective that I’m a part of, the Gold County Paper Mill. The comic features some members of the GCP, so I’ve been doing some sketches to figure out how I want to draw them.

Here’s Dr. Chuch:

Here’s Jak Cardini:

Here’s some other sketches related to the comic:

Jak Cardini, Dr. Chuch, and I used to do performance art together. You can view some videos documenting those performances on my youtube channel, which will give you a preview of the comic. They’re also available for you to own on the GCPM DVD, which is for sale on our etsy.

Draw Thyme X Sketch Klubb

Last nite was Draw Thyme X Sketch Klubb, one of my favorite activities. I get together with a bunch of kewl ppl and we just hang out and draw all nite. I think that just spending time drawing whatever I want in my sketchbook is very important to my artistic practice. I would show y’all my sketches from last nite, but they weren’t very good, so I scanned some pages from the nite before last, when I was drawing at the laundromat.

When I was sketching on this page I was thinking about Obama’s recent budget change for NASA, so I was drawing spaceships and arcologies on Ganymede (or Callisto? I can never remember which moon is farthest from Jupiter).

On this second page I was drawing cartoon Glade, a dragon, and a character based off of the black mage from Final Fantasy I.

Stud Nite

I just got back from my weekly studio nite. I finished a storyboard for the motion comic that I’m gonna make with Will Sellari (tentatively titled Hyperbox #3.7) and I did some sketches.

Stud Nite

I was really struggling to come up with some ideas for my Taffy Hips submission. Maybe the freedom of digital printing (no size limits, full color) is too much for my feeble imagination?

Stud Nite

I dig the sense of a world that I managed to create in the drawing at the top of this page, maybe it’d be good for a videogame? Otherwise I’m just filling the page. Giants. Yawn. Tarp things and crystals. Yawn.
