“Nature Club” by Melinda Tracy Boyce at Paper Party

My wife Glade had the first art opening at her shop-within-a-shop Paper Party this past weekend. The show, called “Nature Club,” is a collection of paintings of cacti, produce, and whales by local cartoonist Melinda Tracy Boyce.

Each piece is a beautiful watercolor with great details. Here are some of my faves:

VGKids at Flatstock 33

This past week was South by Southwest in Austin. One thing that Glade (I remade her website for her birthday, check it out) and I always like to do is go to Flatstock.

VGKids Flatstock 33 poster
VGKids poster for Flatstock 33.

Flatstock is a convention of concert poster artists put on in various cities by the American Poster Institute. There are always tons of dope screenprints there. We always seek out the art prints and buy a few of those. My favorite this year were a group of screenprinters from Ypsilanti, Michigan called VGKids.

Another VGKids poster and stickers. I’m not sure who did this artwork – maybe it’s collaborative?

They also do prints for other people. Check out this two-color Tom Neely print they did:

Final E.A.S.T. 2011 Weekend at the Hensel Hypercastle

Hey y’all, this upcoming weekend is your last chance to come by the Hensel Hypercastle during E.A.S.T. 2011 to see Glade and I’s art. Just like last weekend, we’ll be open from 11am to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday. We’re Stop #121 on the tour, 1807 East 22nd Street.

Here are some shots from last weekend:

Hensel Hypercastle entrance
Here’s the front door. We’ve got Glade’s Welcome to the Hypercastle print on the door, a new artwork by her above the TV, our Christmas tree (out a bit early, we know), and a spinner rack of Glademade cards.

Hensel Hypercastle comic table
Our coffee table is chockful of comics. Most of them are for reading but a few are for sale. I’ve got comics I’ve drawn (such as my latest, VORTEX), comics by fellow GCPM members (such as Kid Space Heater by Josh Burggraf and Lords ov thee Black Sun by Mike Miles), two issues of the GCP’s poetry/comics anthology Catch Up, and various issues of anthologies that I’ve been in (Math Fiction, Candy or Medicine, Smoke Signal, Taffy Hips, and Secret Prison). Come by, chill out on our couch, and feel free to flip through everything.

Hensel Hypercastle prints
We’ve got almost all of the prints from our Hypercastle print show at Austin Books and Comics and every print we had for sale last year.

I switched out the artwork on my walls in my studio.

I hope to see some of y’all this weekend!

Awthum Fetht 6666

I know that I keep talking about this Glade and Mark comic, and it’s coming, I swear y’all, but other things just keep coming up that are time sensitive, like STAPLE! and now SXSW. Also, I have some other comics that I haven’t posted here that are even older, so I may post those first. We’ll see. So, please ignore my empty promises and I’ll stop making them.

Anyway, for the sixth year in a row, the Awthum Empire, producers of fringe, DIY and avant garde culture in Austin and beyond, is putting on their one-day music festival, Awthum Fetht. And, just like last year, I drew a flyer for it:

Also, if you’re a band interested in a flyer or other artwork, please feel free to contact me.

E.A.S.T. Recap and New Miizzzard Screenprint for Sale

I hope that everyone in the U.S. had a belly-filling Thanksgiving! One thing I’m thankful for is everyone who came by our studio during E.A.S.T., so thanks y’all. Of course, what I have is never enough, so Glade and I spent some time brainstorming ways to bring even more people in next year. We’ll see if they work.

If you’re feeling nostalgic, I just added a couple photos to the East Austin Studio Tour 2010 set on my flickr, check it out here.

On the last day of the tour, I finally had a new edition of 20 Miizzzard screenprints ready for sale. Here’s a shot of the purple/green version (there’s also purple/orange):

WITCH ATTACKS Screenprints for Sale

As I’ve mentioned, the incredibly talented Rand Renfrow made some dope-ass three-color screenprints of my one-page comic Witch ATTACKS (previously featured on hahaclever). Look at these things, they’re perfect, it looks like a machine made them:

If you’re interested in owning one of these limited edition bad boys, they’re on sale at Domy here in Austin or you can just buy one from me. Leave a comment or send an email to mark p hensel at g mail dot com.

Also, check out this video interview that the League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen d00dz did of me and Glade at STAPLE! alongside a bunch of other talented exhibitors. We’re the first ones in this video and there are four more that you can check out if you want to see who all was at STAPLE!:

Because I didn’t give him a shout out in the video, props to Robert Bozwell, fellow member of the GCPM, for the work that he did designing the Catch Up website!

SXSW Recap

This past week was South by Southwest here in Austin which is always hectic.

I didn’t do too much, just hung out at various spots on the east side. I went to Domy Books for 20 Zines in 2 Days, put on by my buddy Rand Renfrow of Test Everything and the folks at Winners! Press. Unfortunately (for me) it was so crowded that I never got a chance to draw, but I did get to check out Katy Horan‘s awesome art show there.

I also went to Okaymountain. In the main room they had a totally dope show called Temple of Booom, a collaborative installation by the artist-run alternative space Cinders Gallery that will be open til April 17th. Then, in the project space, they had drawings by a group of dope-ass artists from Lawrence, KS who call themselves the Asteroid Head Art Club. They were all wearing maroon Asteroid Head jumpsuits with wigs and tiny little flags, here’s a pic of me posing with one of ’em:

The bands at Okaymountain were the best that I heard all South By (not that I heard that many):

  • Silent Diane, an electro/new wave band from Austin who just put out a marbled blue 7″
  • White Mice, a noise band from Providence who wear crazy mice costumes emblazoned with Satanist slogans and play cymbals topped with saw blades
  • Chica Fas, a seventeen-piece all-woman, mostly percussion band from Austin, Brooklyn, and Osaka who got the whole room dancing on Saturday nite
  • These Are Powers, a kewl electronic band from Brooklyn

Awthum Fetht V

The past week and a half I haven’t been doing any comic pages. Instead I’ve been working on different versions of a flyer/poster for Awthum Fetht V, which will be next week here in Austin.

Here’s the internet flyer:

Here’s the 11 x 17 color poster, with a full list of all the bands:

They might have some prints of this poster for the first few people who get in the door.

I’m available to do flyers and other promotional materials for bands or shows. If you’re interested, just leave a comment or send me a message at mark p hensel at g mail dot com (no spaces).
