New Photo of an Old Painting: “Petrified Forest Spirits Dancing Beneath the Crescent Nightmare World”

Last week I shipped off the penultimate reward for the Sparkplug Books Kickstarter that funded Vortex. It was an acrylic painting and I still have one more to do. Glade and I took a photo of the painting before I shipped it (I’ll post a good one once the painting has safely arrived), and because I had the setup, we also took a photo of a 2012 painting that I’d never properly shot before. Here it is:

I originally made this for the “Surreal Landscapes” show at Gallery Black Lagoon back in Austin, curated by Cari Palazzolo.

Studio Setup and In-Progress Painting Shots

In order to really get in there and work on some large paintings for my upcoming show at Domy Houston, I crowbarred an easel into my already crowded studio. Here’s a shot of my new setup, with annotations below:

  1. Custodian CD
  2. Hat from the Very Large Array where they filmed Contact
  3. Multiforce by Mat Brinkman
  4. In-progress painting (see below)
  5. Stereo playing some DJ Screw
  6. Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson – a very interesting, innovative fantasy series, I’m super stoked to read the first book of his new multi-volume epic The Way of Kings
  7. Thanks for the birthday present Martin!
  8. Secret Prison #2
  9. Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks (not to be confused with Iain Banks) – I really enjoyed his book The Algebraist but I haven’t gotten to this book yet
  10. My stack of Wheel of Time books – I’ve been reading this series since junior high and I can’t wait for the final two volumes (I keep wanted to write a long blog post talking about how these books have influenced me and why I appreciate them but I’ll probably never write it)
  11. TV tray
  12. I really dig this chair

Here’s a more direct shot of the painting:

Here’s a shot zoomed in on one of the Miizzzards:

I finished this painting last nite. I’m going to take some better photos and post them later this week. I’m thinking that this image will end up being the postcard for the show.

Hyperplanet Paintings

It’s been a while since I’ve posted! I assure you, although I may have been quiet here, I’ve been busy. If you want to hear more from me be sure to also follow me on Twitter for thoughts on sci fi, mini updates and other commentary.

I have images of the paintings that I made for the Totally Wreck show In Science, the Lion Sleeps with the Lamb. They are two paintings of Hyperplanetary systems.

This past week Glade and I have been hard at work getting our collaborative art show for End of an Ear together. We’re going to call it Boongoo Studiooze Presents: SPACE OOZE. It’ll run all April and we’ll have a reception from 6-8pm on 4/20. Here’s a shot of us working on the drawings:

In the bottom middle is an india ink drawing that I drew that Glade colored. On the right I’m working on a gouache painting that Glade is going to draw on with gel pens.
