Comics on Sale at Domy Austin; Reviews

Hey ya’ll, I just dropped off the Josh Burggraf-edited psychedelic sf anthology Future Shock at Domy Books here in Austin. Check out the cover:

Future Shock is 44 full-color pages of freak out sf short stories by the main man JB, Anuj Shrestha, Pat Aulisio, myself, and Victor Kerlow, drawing comics solo and collabo. I’m really excited by what Josh has done with this, but don’t take my word for it, check some words of praise from Tim Callahan in a post-MoCCA review roundup on Comic Book Resources. The anthology is $7. I also restocked Vortex #1 and #2.

In other news, comics by both me and Burggraf got reviewed by Rob Clough on High-Low in a roundup of “odd genre minis”. Clough has this to say about Vortex #2: “Working big and using so many decorative patterns gives this issue a psychedelic feel, yet one that’s grounded in rock-solid and simple layouts.”

Final E.A.S.T. 2011 Weekend at the Hensel Hypercastle

Hey y’all, this upcoming weekend is your last chance to come by the Hensel Hypercastle during E.A.S.T. 2011 to see Glade and I’s art. Just like last weekend, we’ll be open from 11am to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday. We’re Stop #121 on the tour, 1807 East 22nd Street.

Here’s the front door. We’ve got Glade’s Welcome to the Hypercastle print on the door, a new artwork by her above the TV, our Christmas tree (out a bit early, we know), and a spinner rack of Glademade cards.

Our coffee table is chockful of comics. Most of them are for reading but a few are for sale. I’ve got comics I’ve drawn (such as my latest, VORTEX), comics by fellow GCPM members (such as Kid Space Heater by Josh Burggraf and Lords ov thee Black Sun by Mike Miles), two issues of the GCP’s poetry/comics anthology Catch Up, and various issues of anthologies that I’ve been in (Math Fiction, Candy or Medicine, Smoke Signal, Taffy Hips, and Secret Prison). Come by, chill out on our couch, and feel free to flip through everything.

Kid Space Heater at Domy Austin

I recently dropped off Kid Space Heater, a masterful comic by fellow GCPM member and my sometimes collaborator Josh Burggraf, at Domy Books in Austin. Here you can see it on the zine table:

Kid Space Heater is twenty legal-sized pages of grayscale space opera madness packed with Burggraf’s unmistakable high-tech Kirby-esque machinery and cityscapes. But don’t take my word that it’s awesome, take these guys’ words:

  • “Kid Spaceheater is a high speed cartoony adventure that blends Kirby mechgeometry with Meathaus grotesqueries. I really like how there’s a layered flatness to the images, as if the figures were cut from paper and placed on the background image. “Please Save Maria Kondratiev” Art Show with Music by Katie Mullins and Zine Library

This Saturday, starting at 7pm, my friend Alison Kuo is hosting an art show at her space in Brooklyn called “Please Save Maria Kondratiev” with music and a zine library. The artist is Maria Kondratiev, here’s a drawing of hers from 2008:

Because the show coincides with the Brooklyn Book Fest, Kuo is also organizing a zine library with chapbooks by James Yeh, illustrated by Andrew Bulger; interview and other booklets by Temporary Services; prints by Rand Renfrow; and comics by yours truly, Jak Cardini, Josh Burggraf, and Mike Miles of the Gold County Paper Mill; and others. I wanted to have a new zine but I didn’t finish it in time, so I sent a bunch of my old stuff, including the last issue of Catch Up.

Come check it out! There’ll be drinks and food, but please BYOB and bring your friends. The space, Darling House, is located at the corner of Broadway and Union – Lorimer JMZ, Broadway G, or a ten minute walk from the Lorimer L. Look for the glass door, ring top buzzer.

PACC this Sunday

PACC (the Philly Alternative Comic Con) is this Sunday. I wish I could be there this year but it’s not to be. Oh well, I don’t have any new comics to show anyway. Maybe next year. Pat told me, “Just save a dollar a day dude.” I’ll try, I’ll try.

To live vicariously through my blog, I’m going to take a brief break from showing y’all the prints for Glade and I’s show and post all the great promo art for PACC.

Newly Burned Screens, the Complete Shaman Thunder, and some Meta Posting

Newly Burned Screens

Glade and I have an art show at Austin Books and Comics the whole month of August, where our prints will be hanging in the back issue room. I’m going to have two full-color CMYK prints and two screenprints, one that’ll be a single color, and one that’ll be two colors. I had my screens burned at Industry Print Shop and just picked up the screens today.

The Complete Shaman Thunder

I’m proud of this comic. Josh Burggraf was a great guy for me to collaborate with because every time I got one of his pages in my inbox, it pushed me to try harder for my next page.

Meta Posting

I’ve been thinking about how I want to approach blogging, going back and forth for a bit now, and I’d like y’all’s help. In my years as a blogger, I’ve just posted my own art, posted folk-sci-fi content, and, with this site, mixed both together. In April, I decided that the two-to-four hours a week that it takes for me to write two blog posts should instead be devoted to drawing. That’s why you’ve only seen comic pages here and I’ve been talking more about folk-sci-fi on my Twitter feed. But, as Scalzi pointed out to me with this post, why should I invest a lot of time and thought into a site hosted by a company that may one day be permanently beached or become a ghost town?

So what should I do? Would y’all like to see me:

  • Continue to focus on posting my own comics or drawings here regularly, and leave other musings for other blogging platforms?
  • Return tomixing in my own stuff with musings, reviews, and artwork that inspires me?
  • Add a column where I roundup whatever things I find inspirational or interesting, like an expansion/curation of my tweets?

If there’s something I’m not thinking of, let me know that also.

For Shaman Thunder, Josh and I brainstormed the plot, divided it up into a page-by-page outline, and then drew alternating pages. Then, we decided to reorder the first four pages so that it’s two pages of me and then two pages of Josh. We like to be confusing. Shaman Thunder was originally published as a minicomic by the Gold County Paper Mill.

Next week I’m gonna have some short stuff, then maybe something longer? We’ll see. Meanwhile you should read this short one by JB called “Seen this Before” here.
