20 Zines in 2 Days

My buddy Rand is helping to put on this awesome event this weekend here in Austin (which I just realized is already halfway over as I post this):

ATTEND ATTEND ATTEND

Winners! Press and Test Everything have teamed up to present 20 Zines In 2 Days! Join us as we attempt this whirlwind feat of making 20 completely different zines containing drawings, photos and collage in two short days during Domy’s WHAT BY WHAT-EVER.

All content will be created on-site and all the zine themes will be determined by submissions. Anyone can submit an idea. Just send an email to: info@winnerspress.com with your name and idea for a theme.

Everyone is welcome to collaborate and all participants will be featured in at least one editioned, handmade zine!

Joe Legz Awthum Fetht V Poster

How could I post my Awthum Fetht V flyer and not post the dope-ass one that my buddy Joe Legz made?

Let me remedy that right now:

Joe will you ever forgive me?

Awthum Fetht V

The past week and a half I haven’t been doing any comic pages. Instead I’ve been working on different versions of a flyer/poster for Awthum Fetht V, which will be next week here in Austin.

Here’s the internet flyer:

Here’s the 11 x 17 color poster, with a full list of all the bands:

They might have some prints of this poster for the first few people who get in the door.

I’m available to do flyers and other promotional materials for bands or shows. If you’re interested, just leave a comment or send me a message at mark p hensel at g mail dot com (no spaces).

STAPLE! 2010 Recap

Thanks to everyone who came out to see the Gold County Paper Mill and Glademade at our half table this year, we had a blast!

pictured: Dave Fullen and Dr. Chuch of the GCPM, and one of the guys from the Poopsheet Foundation

Each year STAPLE! gets better for us and we really appreciate y’all for making it happen. As you can see, the GCPM debuted a lot of new items at this show, including our DVD of performance art, GPCM t-shirts, David Fullen’s zine of sci-fi short-short stories Swimming at Work, Jak Cardini’s poetry chapbook There Is a Mars, and dope three-color screenprints of my one-page comic WITCH ATTACKS done by the super talented Rand Renfrow as part of his publishing initiative Test Everything. Next year, we’ll have even more – we’re definitely going to have to get a full table.

And for all of y’all who weren’t at STAPLE!, never fear, we’ll be posting our new items for sale here or on our etsy soon. And hey, if you don’t want to wait, just leave a comment or send an email to mark p hensel at gmail dot com (no spaces).

STAPLE! 2010 Stuff

Last nite Glade and I were jamming to some Van Der Graaf Generator and working in our studios. I was finishing up my flyer for Awthumfetht 2010 while Glade worked on cards for STAPLE! 2010, which I’m super stoked about. I got a package full of GCPM t-shirts and poetry chapbooks from my buddy Jak Cardini yesterday, so I was able to lay out most of the stuff that we’ll have on Saturday, check it out:

Dr Chuch also put together a bunch of our DVDs:

I hope to see y’all on Saturday! We’ll be at table 51A.

STAPLE! 2010

Another week no second post, and then I don’t post until Wednesday nite? Jeeeez I gotta get back in the GAME. Seriously though I’m going to try to post every Tuesday and Friday but sometimes I won’t make it, that’s just how it is, so I’m going to stop commenting on it.

This upcoming weekend is STAPLE! 2010. I’ll be exhibiting as part of the Gold County Paper Mill for the third year in a row!

We’ll have a lot of great stuff, including:

  • T-shirts screenprinted by Jak Cardini and Sarah Cassidy with our owl god (viewable [and purchasable!] on our etsy)
  • The Gold County Paper Mill Presents the DVD (viewable on our etsy), a collection of live performances and videos featuring myself, Jak Cardini, and Dr. Chuch (some of which can be watched either here or here), and an interactive version of the comic Impossible Objects, where I illustrated lines from Jak Cardini’s poetry
  • Print versions of the Impossible Objects comic
  • Jak Cardini Achieves the Narratological Singularity and There Is a Mars, two poetry chapbooks by Jak Cardini
  • Swimming at Work, a collection of short fiction by David Fullen
  • Screenprints of my comic WITCH ATTACKS (previously published online at hahaclever.com) done by the super-talented Rand Renfrow
  • Other digital prints of two of my one-page ATTACKS comics
  • My minicomics Masks, TRANZ, and Froghead Hangover

We’re also going to be splitting our table space with the greeting cards and fabric art of my lovely (and talented!) fiancée Glade Whitworth. We hope to see y’all there, you can see our location of our table in the Monarch Event Center (where STAPLE! will be this Saturday, 3/6/10, from 11am to 7pm) here. We’ll be at table 51A, right by our buddies the Poopsheet Foundation and the League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen. Also, when you come, be sure to check out the STAPLE! Program Guide, in which I’ll have a two-page comic.

Smoke Signal #3 at the First Annual Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Fest

Smoke Signal #3, put out by Desert Island’s Gabriel Fowler, is debuting at the first annual Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival.

The festival, hosted by Desert Island and PictureBox, will be this upcoming Saturday, Dec 5th, from 11am to 7pm at Our Lady of Consolation Church, 184 Metropolitan Ave, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. If I lived in the tri-state area, I’d definitely be there, the lineup looks amazing and admission is free.

Smoke Signal #3, which is also free, is a newsprint all-comics anthology featuring the work of many amazing cartoonists!

After the festival, this newsprint anthology can be ordered through Desert Island’s online stop for the price of shipping or picked up in store.

EDIT: I thought that the second Shamanman strip would be in the third Smoke Signal, but they changed the specs and I didn’t realize. It has the work of a lot of awesome people though, so y’all should definitely check it out.

First Weekend of E.A.S.T. 2009 Recap

First of all, thanks to everyone who came by Boongoo Studio, stop #125 on the East Austin Studio Tour this past weekend!

I got to play host to friends and talk to some new people, including our awesome neighbor Thor Harris and these guys Ben Goddard and Daniel. Ben and Daniel recently moved to Austin from the East Coast and have settled in to Glade and I’s old house. Ben sent me his website, he takes some pretty hilarious, well-constructed photos, including this one:

Here’s a shot of something that I haven’t posted before:

It’s a collaboration between me and Glade, it was a landscape that I didn’t use for the No More Worlds show that Glade added a bunch of awesome details to. Speaking of that No More Worlds show, I should have all of those drawings back next week, so come by if you want to check ‘em out!

Here’s a shot of Aaron Flynn’s installation, which I didn’t have a photo of last week:

That inside-out polar bear/coyote is amazing.

And finally, thanks to Kate Watson for the shout out on Glasstire! I invite you all to come by and snoop this next weekend.

East Austin Studio Tour

Glade and I are participating in the East Austin Studio Tour this year as Boongoo Studio. We’re number 125 on the map, come check out our spaces!

Here are some shots of my studio:

As you can see in the upper left, I’ve got plenty of Gold County Paper Mill books left over from STAPLE! 2008, including Jak Cardini Achieves the Narratological Singularity, a book of J.C.’s poems, and Impossible Objects, a collaborative book between me and Jak.

Here’s a detail shot. I’ve also got some color drawz, raw comix pages, and black and white india ink drawz.

Here’s my drawing space and something that I was working on.

Our good friend Alison Kuo came and did an installation in our living room! We’re also going to be featuring the artwork of Beverly Anderson and Aaron Flynn.
